The Federal delegates are surprised and indignant at the suggestion that Australia will attempt to abandon the compromise arranged with the approval of all the Governments excepting Queensland. The delegatus tp en-, ti dent that Mr. Ohamberlain will .uyailj adhere to the compromise, and consider that it would be a grave breach of faith for any Australian Government to reopen the matter after agreeing to a compromise, especially Binee nothing closer to the original Bill is obtainable. Sir 0. 0. Kingston is making direct representations respecting the Hon. W. F. Holder's condemnation of the compromise, which he fully sanctioned. The delegates have at length obtained possession of Chief Justice Way's memorandum dealing with the Bill from the Colonial Office. (Received 15,1.20 a.m.) Brisbane, June 14. Mr. Routledge, Acting-Premier, has wired Mr. McLean strongly supporting a conference of Premiers. Even if New South Wales stands out, he believes they could agree to a solution of the Clause 74 difficulty, and then unanimously ask Sir W. J. Lyne to cable to Mr. Chamberlain. He thinks they could suggest an amendment which would be a real and not an illusory compromise. Melbourne, June 14. Mr. Deakin has cabled to Mr. McLean that he is not altogether content with the wording of Clause 74, but accepted the best possible alternative of the Bill for the sake of unity. Ho strongly urges a ppeedy acceptance, at> delay will be very disastrous and is already causing peril. Mr. McLeaD replied informing Mr. Deakin of the proposed Premiers' Conference and u joint cable to Mr. Barton. The fasmanian Premier concurs in cabling to Mr. Barton. Sir J. Forrest iufornitd Mr. McLean that Westralia concurred in Mr. Chamberlain's original proposal providing for appeal to the Privy Council. His Government opposed having anything to do with appeals to the Privy Council.
