The Agricultural Department lias received the fallowing cable from Capetown in reply to ono sent asking prices for colonial produce:—Wheat, 18s Cd to 19s per sack of 2031b; oats, 16s per 1501bs; maize, 12s 9d to 13s the 200 [lbs; potatoes, 12s to 16s per 1501bs; butter, Is 2£d to Is 3|d per lb (nil (duty paid); mutton, 4|d porlb; beef, 4|d. The duty on whoat, oats, and maize is 2a per lOOlbs; butter, 3d per lb; potatoes, 7J percent. The duty 'on frozen meat is temporarily suspended. There is a large demand for butter and tinned mia's, potatoes, wheat, oats, and maize. There is f mall demand for cheese, hams, bacon, and jams. To compete with Australia, Nov/ Zealand must offer the same freight rate per direct mail steamer, the first cost not to exceed Melbourne prices.
