The miner Murdoch has been sentenced to death for the attempted murder of his mate, Clarke, in November last. He kept Clarke imprisoned in a shaft for two days without food or water, threw down lighted plugs of dynamite, and beat him back several tunes when he attempted to escape. Clarke was almost dead when he finally managed to get out.
