EDUCATIONAL MATTERS.
A PROPOSED AMENDMENT. [PEE PBESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, February 28. Replying to a request for better financial provision for school committees and increase of capitation grant to Education Boards, the Minister for Education explained that a Bill to amend the Education Act, which will be introduced next cession, would provide for a uniform sjale of salaries for State school teachers. Boards thus beiug relieved ol' responsibility infixing and paying salaries would b-) in a position to make more generous provision for school committees. The Minister also promised to promote technical education.
The financial position of the Board of Education is not at all satisfactory. The Chairman (Mr. Blair) informed the Board to-day that unless it took cognisance of the excess of salaries above the amounts fixed by the regulations it would find itself in a financial difficulty. The Board had been relying on the yearly increase of 500 children, but the figures showed that the attendance was falling off, and, as an instance of this, he pointed out that whereas there was an attendance of 12,209 children in December last there were only 11,323 last month. One way and another the Board was now about I £4300 to the bad.
