THE DEPARTURE FROM LYTTBLTON. Chkishchurch, February 19. The Knight Templar left the Heads for Albany at 7.30 last night. The men were disappointed that there were no musical instruments, but Mr. 0. G. Stead became acquainted with the fact, and Mrs. Stead presented her own piano to the troops, with the intimation to sell the instrument on arrival in South-Africa, the proceeds to form the nucleus of an amusement fund.

On Saturday, 30,000 went through from Chfistchurch to Lyttelton by train.

A RUMOUR. Chkistchurch, February 19. A rumor circulated to-day that the Knight Templar had returned to Lyttelton caused.a good deal of anxiety. The story probably arose through someone mistaking the steamer Undaunted, approaching the harbor, for the troopship. IMPERIAL THANKS, Wellington, February IS). His Excellency has received the following from the Imperial Government: —" Her Majesty's Government learn with very great satisfaction of the departure of the Third New Zealand Contingent, and of loyalty and enthusiasm prevailing; also of contemplated departure of a fourth contingent towards end of March."

On Monday morning, His Worship the Mayor (Mr. E, Dockrill) received £ the following telegram from Lieut.- ' Colonel Sommerville:—"Sent your j boys away fitted out in everything, Wiggins' horse shut out: want of room; • goes in the Undaunted on Saturday. Your men wißh me to thank you for - your kindness. All left in the best of spirits." The Premier also wiped to Mr. Dockrill as follows Grand send;ofl.
