ONE RETIREMENT

United States Supreme Court Bench Press Association— Copyright. Washington, May 20. The Judiciary Committee of the Senate decided by 10 votes to 8 to report unfavourably on President Roosevelt’s Judiciary Reorganisation Bill. Justice Willis Van Devanter, a member of the to-called Conservative wing of the United States Supreme Court, shortly befjore tjhis decision, announced his, retirement as from June 2. It is considered significant that rhe Judiciary Commilteets vo.te or. the Bill closely followed Justice Van Devanter’s 1 retirement announcement. Seven Democrats were among the majority on the Judiciary Committee. The two occurrences are virtually certain to defeat President Roosevelt’s Bill. Even some of his warmest supporters admit that the retirement from the bench, accomplishes the President’s alm 8 by giving me court a Liberal majority of six to three.
