HOMES WITH RADIO

A DOMINION SURVEY Sixty-Eight Per Cent Equipped The Post Office is responsible for a radio survey of the Dolniiiion from a new angle. It has been able to ascertain how ndar we are approaching to what might be termed the full potential demand for radio licenses which, it is assumed, would reach the maximum when every house in New Zealand has itt radio-receiving set. The investigation showed that over 68 per cent, of the households are already equipped in this way. • Disregarding figures of total population, Post Office officials based their calculations upou the actual number of households in all postal districts, contrasting these figures with the number of receiving licenses current at the end of March in the same areas'. A grouping of the Dominion figures showed tlie following results: Households 352,536 Radio licenses 240,733 Per cent licenses to households 68.29 ' Radio has reached its greatest popularity according to this survey in the Wellington radio district where the proportion of licenses to households is 70.66 per cent..; Christchurch district (including the West Coast) with 67.22 per cent.; land Otago-Southland 63.28 per cent. Radio listeners’ licenses have been increasing rapidly of recent years. The advances in 1935-36 were 39,357, and in 1936.37 a further 48,887. At this rate of progress at seems probable that within another twelve months the proportion of New Zealand homes equipped with radio-re-ceiving sets will be at least 80 per cent.
