The Carnegie Illinois Corporation, a subsidiary of United Steel, yesterday signed an agreement with the union granting recognition of the union, wage increases, a 40-hour week and other demands, thus ending the possibility of a general steel strike in the spring, which was previously freely predicted. The agreement ie the first with an independent trade union in the history of the United Steel Corporation. The news was received with re- | joicing at Washington by the Secretary of Labour, Miss Frances Perkins, and it was* later announced that the Government would immediately re-ad-vertise for bids for 25,000,0001 b. of ; steel urgently needed for naval construction. Officials feel that the .statement of the steel troubles is particularly timely, due to the announcement that Britain Will have 25 capital chips in 1942. It is recognised that the United States policy is to keep pace with the leader. Meanwhile five new strikes have begun at Detroit, bringing the total to nine. The Motor Product Company and the, Murray Corporation, which are manufacturing bodies and parts of motors are closed through strikes. They have 7000 employees. The Zenith Carburetor Company," which is also qlosed, has 750 workers. Two large restaurants are closed through a “sit-down” strike of Wait- ! resses and kitchen employees.
