COLONEL CAMPBELL

Died Yesterday At Age Of 79 Press Association—Copyright. Nelson, Last Night. The death occurred suddenly to-day of Colonel G. F. C. Campbell, Controller and Auditor-General, at the age of 79 years. Colonel Campbell was born at Nelson in 1858 and was educated at Nelson College. He entered the Public Service as a cadet in the Public Works Department in 1875 and in 1879, after he had served for a period in the Justice Department, he Was transferred to the Land Tax Department. In 1894 he was appointed de-puty-Commissioner of Taxes and positions he afterwards held were deputy Valuer-General, deputy superintendent of the Advances to Settlers’ Office, Valuer-General, general manager of the State Fire Insurance Office and Commissioner of Taxes. In 1913 he was appointed Secretary to the Treasury, a position he held until he was appointed Controller and Audi- ; tor-General in 1922.
