LUSITANIA DIAMONDS.
DISCOVERY BY FISHERMAN.
An extraordinary story involving tho! romantic recovery of diamonds valued at aTbout £30,000, which were salved after the sinking of the JLusitania, will be brought before the Postmastergeneral in the House of Commons by Jeremiah McVeigh. Much mystery has been attached for many months to certain rumours of happenings off the coast of Ireland, but no information pan at present be obtained as to the present whereabouts of the diamonds.
McVeigh told a "Daily Chronicle" representative that on May 11th, 1915, four days after the Lusitanja was sunk, John H!ayes, the captain of a fishing 'boat, found a postal basket floating on tho sea about ten miles to the south of High Island, near Glandore, County I Cork. In the postal package were three registered parcels which, it. is stated, contained diamonds. ' These were surrendered to the coastguards "at Castle Townsend and eventually reached the postal officials in London, who acknowledged their roceipt. The diamonds had been sent on tho Lusitania by a firm in New York, but it has not been found possible for the salvors to discover the consignees and the firm in New York, to whom the diamonds were returned, refused to accept delivery. The salvors received a letter from a firm of solicitors in London, saying that the package contained diamonds^ and though the man who found them gave evidence before the American consul, only his expenses were paid.
