THE CITY GASWORKS.
SHORTAGE OF COAL,
SUPPLIES' NEARLY EXHAUSTED
THE POSITION CREHOAL,
The position in regard to coal sup-plies-for the city gasworks is serious and there is only sufficient coal in stock to last until 10 o'clock this morning unless arrangements are mad© in the meantime for supplies from the Railway Department, which, it is understood, has fair reserves on hand.
•Every endeavour has been mad© by the City Engineer to secure supplies, but without success, and the position has been gradually getting worse until it has now nearly reached the limit. Yesterday, the Mayor (Mr. W. W. Snodgrass) wired urgently to the Goal Controller, setting forth the position, and asking if he could arrange with the Hallway Department to make a temporary advance of coal ponding the arrival of supplies.
Last evening, owing to the extreme shortage, the street lamps were not lit. Fortunately there was some moon early in the evening, and those who were out were not greatly inconven-! ienced. In the meantime consumers are urged to exercise the strictest economy.
