RETURNED SOLDIERS' AND THE WAR MEMORIAL
(To the Editor of "The Colonist.")
Sir, —Will you kindly permit me through your columns to draw the attention of returned soldiers to the following resolution passed at a general meeting of the association, held on the 4th inst., namely: "That members be asked not to forward subscriptions individually to the War Memorial Committee but to the Association, the total fund so subscribed to be then sent for- ! ward as from the returned soldiers as a. whole," . It was the meeting above referred to that, in response to the request of citizens for an expression of opinion as to form of and site for S~ memorial, suggested that it should be the statue of a private soldier in fighting kit erected at the Church Steps. This proposal, we understand, is to be given effect to. Whilst the meeting recognised that the citizens' proposal is for a War Memorial in the broadest sense, it was nevertheless felt that in the minds of •> all returned men tfie memorial must primarily be to the memory of those comrades of ours who did not return. 'We therefore feel that returned soldiers wili wish to make their effort towards the erection of the memorial not an individual, but a wholly united one. Subscriptions forwarded to me will be acknowledged direct. 1 am, etc, N. A. VERCOE, Secretary, Nelson Returned; Soldiers' Association.
