Dr. J. It. Tillyard, of Sydney University, has been appointed to take charge of the biological department of the Cawthron Institute. Mr P. M. White, of the Nelson branch of the Bank of New Spilth Wales, who has been transferred, tem-porai-ilv, to the Hawera branch,, left by yesterday's steamer for Wellington. Mr Ernest L. Eyre, the author of some verses which appeared in our columns yesterday, is a native of Dunedin, but was for a long period a resident of Auckland. Travelling through New Zealand, he has sold a large number of copies of the little volumes of his poems.

One of the oldest residents of Waka- ,• tipu, Mr Daniel IM'Kenzie, died at Lako' County Hospital on Saturday evening. ' Deceased, who was in his eighty-fourth : year, was born at Ci ieff , Perthshire,! Scotland, and came to New Zealand m the Barcpje Geelong in 1861. j

Mr Beilby Clow, an old resident of the- Birkenhead district, Auckland, died somewhat unexpectedly on Sunday evening. He was born in Glasgow SS) years ago, and came to New Zealand 43 years ago.

Mr. Victor Beck, touring manager for the Diggers (Jate New Zealand Divisional Pierrots) is at present in Nelson arranging for the -appearance of the colnpany at the Theatre. Royal on March 4th, ota and 6th (race nights).

There passed away on Sunday last' one of Auckland's oldest residents in! the person of Mrs M. E. Eagleton, re-j liet of the late Captain Alex Eagleton. < Mrs Eagleton arrived in Auckland with her parents in the ship Minerva in November, 1847. At the time of her arrival she was seven years of age. Bur-! ing her 73 years' residence in Auckland! she saw the city grow from a village to I a large and prosperous community. j The late Mr John Welsh, who died at Kaitangata recently, was born at Had- : dington, Scotland, in 1840. He arrived . at Port Chalmers in the ship Eo'bert, Henderson on September 3, iB6O, and j took part in the gold digging rushes of! Lindis ami ■Gabriel's Gully. He went to reside at Kaitangata- 47 years ago, and proved a most worthy and estim-j able citizen,, taking part in anything for j the- welfare of the town. He was a i prominent member of the Presliyteriaa! Church, and-was one of the founders ofj the Loyal Alexandra Lodge, M.TJ.J 1.U.0.F.,in1869. !
