The annual exhibition of work by the ■students of the Nelson Technical School was opened yesterday. This year the display is. a very • comprehensive one,, and. includes •fijjecimona of all subjects
taught at the school. The result reflects the highest credit, hot only on. the teaching staff ? but on. the pupils themselves, and high as the standard of work has beeJl in previous years, the general*opinion is that this year's exhibition is the best yet held. Unfortunately, owing to the great pressure on our space this morning, we are unable to give more than a mere outline of the work exhibited, which included specimens of millinery, dressmaking, art needlework, cookery, painting, basketmaking, nature sketching (in water and oils), brush-work, drawing, ca/binefomaking, metal work, plumbing, engineering (including dynamos made by the boys), woodwork, etc. The sketches from nature were admittedly a feature of the exhibition, while the ladies found much to interest them in the display of blouses, costumes, trimmed millinery, etc. This branch of the work ha£ been taught by Mrs F. Cross, who has also had charge of the art needlework, basket-making and cookery classes. The plumbing classes were taught by Mr H. Coltman, .woodwork by Mr G. Coleman, engineering by Mr T. D, Milne and the art classes by the Director (Mr F. C. J. Cockburn). In the cabinefonaking exhibits a very . handsome overmantel, executed by a young ' lady 20 years of age, and a very fine , cabinet, the work of a lady also, deserve more than passing mention, and serve to show what can be done by apt pupils.
