ARRIVAL OF PROFESSOR EASTERFIELD.
Professor Easterfiekl, who was recently appointed Director of tho Gawthron Institute, arrived in .Nelson yesterday morning. Later in the day he was met by the Trustees, and the chairman (the Bishop of Nelson) extended him a welcome. In the afternoon the Director, in company with the Trustees, paid a visit to the site of the proposed Institute at Annesbrook. It is understood that, owing to the cost of matctv ials and tho scarcity of labour, building operations will not be gone on with just yet, 'but it is intended to commence the work of the Institute early in J anuai'v in temporary premises, to bo rented. Mr. Eigg, agricultural chemist of the Institute, is expected to arrive in December from America, where he has been visiting and inspecting' scientific research institutes. Mr. Kigg will inaugurate the work. Owing to prior engagements-in,: Weir lington. Professor Easterfield wiil be unable to take up his permanent residence here until April or May of next year. He will, however, pay frequent visits to Nelson as may be required in. connection with the preliminary work oft I the Institute.
