COAL POSITION.
NOT MUCH IMPROVEMENT.

Wellington, July 25. me Hon. A. M. Myers mentioned in a coal statement some days ago that the Government was trying to obtain from i England a steamer suitable for carrying ?w,uSi^ James Allen stated to-day t&at the Government had received definlte advice that this was impossible. A warning is issued" that railway travellers ought to beware, as restrictions on passenger traffic may be introduced shortly and people travelling for pleasure may find their return to their homes not easy. The coal position is said not to be improving much, and it is uncertain whether any extension can be made in goods trame on the railways. »
rvu ™ InvercargiH, July 25. me Chamber of Commerce telegraphed to the General Manager of Railways asking, if the Chamber guaranteed the department 60 tons of coal per week m addition to the present supply, the goods traffic could be improved to prevent trade stagnating. The chamber also proposed that a citizens' committee, as at Christchureh, should assist the department by keeping a check on goods carried by rail
