TAKAKA.
April 3rd. The weather hero of late is little short of perfect—^real Indian summer sort — bright and sunny with just a suspicion of freshness in the air and very cold nights and heavy dews. - Considering the little rain that has fallen since Christmas everywhere looks wonderfully green and the parched appearance of this time of the year is quite missing. There is at present an absolute epidemic of chopping and changing, of buying and selling of businesses and farm properties.
Mv J. R. Haldane, %vho recently sold his racecourse run to two returned soldiers, Messrs Ashley Hitchcock and G. Scott, is now going to leave Takaka to take up land at Onga Onga. Mr Haidane has lived all his life so far in Takaka, and in days'gone by was a tower of strength m the scrum of many famous football matches for his club and for the representatives, and has also played for the Nelson representatives. He was also a prominent cricketer and tennis player in his day and has for many years been a leading player-in all bowling tournaments throughout the district and has represented "his club in Dominion Championships. The Bowling Club especially will feel his loss severely. Mr Horace Wells of East Takaka has sold his place also, and left for the north. '* \
jVIr.H. F. Berry, of Rototai, has disposed of his fine dairy farm to Mr Cooper, of Rai Falls, and has purchased a place at Roekville, whither he will shortly remove. < 5 Mr F. M. Edgar has sold his blacksmith business to Mr Arnold Sparrow, a recently returned soldier.
Mr A. G.Salisbury has disposed of his dentistry practice to Mr Noel Trent, of Nelson. *
Mr Win. Neilson, who has for years • managed the local branch of Mr Louis j Kerr, jeweller, is being transferred to Nelson, Mr Gilespie, of Nelson, taking his place. Mr Neilson has taken a prominent part in all local doings and will be much missed here. He is at present chairman of the Town Board ana ' chairman of the District High School Committee and is an active member of the Patriotic League and other local j bodies, taking an especial interest in the '] Farmers' Union, fruitgrowing, and bee ! culture. . . ! The Golden Bay Dairy Co-operative is j sustaining a double loss in that Messrs; John and T. Cook, manager and secre-! tary respectively, are leaving the com- j pany's employ in order to take over the! Appleby^ Butter Factory. I Mr John Cook has been very success-; ful with his 'butter while here and has . won the Hamilton gold cup twice, be- j sides numerous ether trophies for his j product. ' ' ; The recently instituted' Returned Sol-' diers' Club socials, winch are run fortnightly by a committee of ladies and gentlemen, have so far been a -great i success and the three already held have ' proved the club room ail. too small for the purpose. The committee are arranging to-enlarge the room space and provide more tables a,nd gear to cope with the increasing popularity of the functions. ' More soldiers are returning every day and it is a pleasant sight to see at last fit men coming back. * j The Peace Celebration Committee have mapped, out a three day programme to celebrate the great event and sub-; j committees have been appointed to carry j out the details. Sunday—a day of thanksgiving; Monday—procession and; sports on Show Ground. Tuesday—a. i monster children's day on Pohara beach. /A football revival meeting is afoot now to bring the lost, game to light again and we hope this winter to see several clubs going strong and a good cup tournament run off. <■ Tennis; has been actively followed bd of late and inter-club matches are a weeKly occurrence. _ Last Wednesday a team of sis men from Collingwood came down and after a very keen afternoon's play asserted their superiority over a local sis <by SOi games to 73. The play all round Vis' excellent and the large crowd, of onlookers followed the play very closely, i On Saturday a team of 4 ladies and*4 ■ men of the Haiwatha Club played Tara- f: koho on the latter court and won by one game after a very close contest. A]. series of tennis matches are mooted forEaster— which is usually a very lifeless] holiday here. . |
•'.. : '". •.. ; April Sth. An error occurred in our • Takaka notes published on Thursday nmrninc last, when it was stated that Messrs' J. and T. Cook, of the- Golden Bsy Dairy •Co-operative, were taking over
fej-APP^^y factory mr the Waiinea. dM*nct: The factory taken over, iftht .Brightwater factory, and as Mr. John 7 Mwk^isi ah^expert? butter maker and Mr. Ihomas Cook is an expert -account-'----aut and. has- a vfchorough knowledge of • the business end of butter factories it is safe to predictcthat the affairs of factory will very shortly assume a rosy.hue.
