The weather was fine but.t dull, with a smoke haze and shifting , clouds, while a choppy rear breeze play- ; ed down the range and cut some men's 1 scores about. Franklin, of Napier, was t the first to get a shot away, registering j a ball. Crowds gathered round the leaders' targets, but interest soon began to ( centre in King, who got in a string of i fives and only got off the bull on the fifth i and last shots, which were a 3 and a 4. i West, Merrilees, and Hamilton also got < 46, and fired off with King for the first ] place in the range total, West Avinning < by scoring 14 to King's 13. Morgan, Loveday,. and Jarvis also had a fire-off ' for third place.
