PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.

ANNUAL BULB SHOW

September 19 th. The annual bulb show in connection with the Trinity Presbyterian Ghurch was* opened by the Mayor (Mr. W. W. Snodgrass) yesterday afternoon, and was continued in the evening, when there wns a large attendance of the public. Tlie display of flowdrs was excellent, ami the general quality of the exhibits was of a. high standard. Tho blooms in the daffodil section were magnificent, and theiv even quality caused competition for the awards to-be keen. Theeffectiveness of the display was enhanced by the' table dippings, which ■were (it »»rown and.green, and these showed flic golden blooms off to advantage,. In addition to tho daffodils, there was a'fine show of anemones and other imibons blooms^ besides other cut flowers and numerous tastefully decorated baskets of flowers There was also a large entry for the best decorated table, and the exhibitors displayed considerable karti&try in the arrangements and designs. A new departure was the- competition for decorated mantelpieces, for which there were 'three entries, the decorations being very effectively carried out.

Mr. 2). M. Bradbury, of Christehurch, was the judge, but owing to his late arrival from Blenheim, consequent upon a. flooded river, he was not able to commence his task until after the show was opened. In conversation, Mr. Bra dbury said that for individual exhibits the show of narcissi was. the finest he had seen, and gonerally the tlisplaj' was of -a very high class. He was struck ■■with the largo number of expensive varieties that were staged. The specimens of Leedsii, Bernardino, .and White Queen, to mention some only of the kinds represented, were very good indeed. The hyacinths and stocks were of a quality unexcelled in his experience, and it was evident to him that Nelson growers were not only favoured by exceptional climatic conditions, but gave the best attention to the cultivation of the. flowers to which they devoted their efforts. -The only fault that Mr. Bradbury could find Ava» that some of the narcissi vero on the coarse side on account of ovor-generoutfj treatment. , j Mrs. !&. Askew sent for exhibition only a number of black arum lilies, which jvttracted attention. In addition to the flower show, there were several stalls for the sale of cut flowers, sweets, plain and fancy work, etc., the •stallholders being as follow:— Flower Stall. Mrs. W. Rout and Misses Ckmston and Dimaivt. Sweets: Mesdaiues E. W. Burton and W. Milner. Plain and: Fancy Work: Mesdaxnes CHbb, Angus, .■ McLean, J. and W. .Robertson..Tea. Room:' Mesdames Rowe and -jjWalker (in charge) and assistants.,Mrs. W. G. Kerr is tlie secretary, and had general change of the arrangements. . Tlie 12th Regiment Band played selections outside the church in the early part of the evening. The show will be open this afternoon from 2.30 and again this evening, when an interesting programme of vocal and elocutionary items will be given.
