BAPTIST SUNDAY SCHOOL.

ANNIVERSARY SERVICES

ANNUAL PRIZE-GIVING

(From "The Colonist," Oct. 7, 1918.) In celebration of their fifty-eighth anniversary, the Nelson Baptist Sunday'! School held three services in the School of Music yesterday. The morning service was conducted by the Rev. G. H. Gibb (Trinity Presbyterian Church), who delivered a discourse based on the words, "And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of Hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels." In the afternoon the Rev. I'aul Cane (Congregational Chmch) gave an interesting address, referring to his work in Samoa, where ■he was engaged as a missionary. The Rev. John Laird conducted the evening service, preaching from the words ; "There is a lad here." As in former years, the singing of the 'special hymns was a very enjoyable feature of the three services. Mr' E. A. Wood con- | ducted, find Mr John Tait was at the Cawthron organ, a musical treat being the result. The National Anthem was heartily sung, and Mr Tait played the Hallelujah Chorus with admirable effect. A-word of praise is due to Miss Mabel Thompson, who played for all the practices prior to the anniversary day. At —c afternoon service Miss Burton presented the prizes to the, infant section of the school. The platform was tastefully decorated with lilies and evergreens. Tho three services were largely attended, especially that in the evening, when extra seating accommodation had to be provided, numbers being unable to obtain seats. October 10th.

Tho series of meetings in connection with the anniversary of the JSelson Baptist Sunday School were brought to a conclusion in the School of Music last evening, when there was again'a large attendance, notwithstanding the heavy rain that set in after nightfall. The meeting was presided over by Mr Thomas Petti t (superintendent). In the course of his address tho chairman referred to the fact that this was their fourth anniversary since the outbreak of .war. During that period a heavy toll had been made on the teachiiig staff of the school, while -many of the young "men associated "..Nyith the school had answered^ ""the .'call of King and country. There had. " returned from the front Messrs S. Ganriington, F. Newton, and R. Roper./ The annual report, submitted by the seoretary (Miss Thompson), gave the number of scholars as follows: —Girls 133, boys 115. The infant class, still I carried on under the able leadership of j Mr and Mrs' Harold Wood, assisted by a' staff of young Jadies, is well up to the standard. ' The number of teachers is 19. Reference was made to the losses sustained during the year. Mr JBric Black was at the front, and Mr A. B. Emmett, Mr John Emmett, and Miss Emmett had removed to Wanganui. The Rev. John Laird (pastor) briefly addressed the audience, urging upon teachers, scholars, and parents to make the school more effective during the year it is now entering upon. A programme of an interesting and entertaining 'character was rendered by the scholars.
