NELSON BAPTIST SUNDAY SCHOOL.

ANNUAL PRIZE-GIVING

The series of meetings in connection with the anniversary of the Nelson; Baptist Sunday School were brought to a conclusion in the School of Music last evening, when there was again a large attendance, notwithstanding tho heavy rain that set in after nightfall. Ihe meeting wa^s presided over by Mr Thomas Pettit (superintendent). In the course of his address the chairman referred to the fact that this was their fourth anniversary since tlie out-, break of war. During that period a! heavy toil had been made on the teach- • ing staff of the school, while many of the young men associated with the i school had answered the call .of King j and country. There had returned! from the front Messrs S. Cannington, F. Newton, and R. Roper. The annual report, submitted by the secretary (Miss Thompson), gave the number of scholars as follows:—Girls ■133, boys 115. The 'infant class, still carried on under the able leadership of Mr and Mrs Harold Wood, assisted by i a staff of young ladies, is well up to; the'standard. The number of teachers is 19. Reference was made to the losses sustained during the j year. Mr: Jttric Black was at the "front,'"and Mr A. I B. ; Emmett, Mr John Emmett, and! Miss Emmett had removed to VVanganui.

The Rev. John La#d (pastor) briefly addressed the audience, • urging upon teachers, scholars, and parents to make the school more, effective during the year it is now entering upon. A programme of an interesting a-nd entertaining 'character was rendered by the scholars. Owing to the prevailing epidemic of influenza a number of the scholars were absent, and were unable to take part in the programme.

THE PRIZE LIST. The Rev. John Laird presented the prizes, the list being as follows:— Girls. Junior Bible Class: Doris Baker and Gladys Cotton equal 1, Gwen Drake 2 ; teacher's special, Gwen Penney. Special mention Avas made of the work of Miss Burton, Vvho coached the scholars for the Scripture examination, evcrv competitor gaming a certificate.. The special hymns were repeated, Mr E. A. Wood conducting and Mr John Tait accompanying at the Cavrthron organ. Both these ' gentlemen were thanked for their valuable assistance, as were all who had in any way assisted to make the services the success they had been. The pronouncing of the Benediction, followed b.M the National Anthem, concluded the meeting.
