OTKE.iI SWEETS TO BE OUT OFF
Si/ Charles Bnt'hurst, M.P., chairman. of the Sugar Commission,, at a conference at the Food Saving Exhibition', at the Institute of Hygiene, London, in March, said: -The sugar prospect is liot a bright one. and continuous supplies cannot be depended upon. A great deal bad in the past come from Java, a three months' voyage. These voyages have been . cancelled, and 'we must sharu Cuban sugar with the United States.
Asked why the Government allowed so much sugar to be wasted in the manufacture of sweets and chocolates, Sir Charles replied: "By far the largest proportion of the .sweets go to the British Army; and those supplies must lie continued. But it is proposed to confine the .sweets sold in civilian shops'to chocolates and those products v/Tiich can, in case of need, sweoten beverages in place ox sugar." The output of saccharine would be more than trebled during; the next few months, the price reduced, and supplies mad.> available for people taking 'tea and coffee- «n restaurants and teashops.
