BRITISH SHIPBUILDING.
NATIONAL YARDS ESTABLISHED
STATEMENT BY DR. MACNAMARA
(Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.)
ForKfon, March 7. I>f. Macnamara, Financial Secretary to the Admiralty, announced tt at three national shipyards had been established for the assembling of standard ships. He could promise_34 ships and hoped all would be completed in 12 months. He would lay the first keel in April and launch the first ship in October. Ihe Government's anticipations regarding the numbers of men to be released from the Army for shipbuilding had,not yet been realised. ' At the Chamber of Shipping, Sir J. R. Ellerman moved a resolution, which was carried, regretting the unsatisfactory progress in commercial shipbuilding due to taking the initiative out of the hands of private owners. Ihe number of standard ships produced in a year did not equjal the sinkings in a fortnight.
