MANIFESTO FROM THE CHURCHES
(From "The Ooibnidt,"- July 14.) . The following statement, -signed by representatives of the several religious denominations in Nelson, has peen handed to us for publication:—
We, the ministers of religion in the city of Nelson, desire to express our conviction that it is in the highest interests of the moral, sbclal, and economic life of the nation that our people,: should exercise thrift and soli-restraint;. that in expressing this convictior. we desire inino way to reflect upon the character of any class i.i the community, whether military or /Civil.. .
That we believe tba'tone of the most effective ways of enabling the people to save and exercise this self-rrestraint is that Parliament should pass an Act to {•lose the 'bars in all hotels and clnbs from 6/p.iri: to 8 ffl'.m.'j and that the custom oF shouting be .made illegal. . : ~VVe' therefore request Parliament to pass the Bill now- before the Legislative and to embody these previsions, or as an alternative that the Government nrnnodntolv po\idc foi a leieiendum to ho taken s,olely on this question.
