[United Pkess Association. ]

WeHington, Jon. 6

Tlie. first meeting of the Recruiting Board is likely to be held on Saturday. De-tails of the recruiting- scheme have been prepared by the .Defence l>epartuiiont, but tho preparation of alphabefcical lists' showing the men of :nilitary age in the various districts will take several weeks. Many, hundreds of recruits will be> wanted in the meantime., and the Defence Minister stated tn-dav. that he wanted existing recruiting organisations and the public to realise the? urgency of the call to complete use Eleventh and fill the Twelfth and Thiri reenth Reinforcements.

Fahnerston North, Jan. 6.

Speaking at a gathering of ■ townspeople to bid farewell to Lieutenant Jacobs, to-night,.. Mr ■ Mas-soy said we had 's€-nt 3.1.000 "men, ]2,000 were m camp, and 2000 were going. Under our obligation to the Imperial authorities this year' another 30,000 would be required, and ho believed they would be forthcoming. Personally he would like to see theiii go by the voluntary system. It. would not be .satisfactory to see some £0 as volunteers and some as conscripts, but, if necessary, it might cemo to that. Ho believed it was n splendid thing that originally we had gone in for national eervice. Honestly he believed in the principle of r.i'.tkmnl service. If vine could not geti tho 30,000----who were nsxytiired this year by the existing system we must, to fulfil our I solemn .'undertaking, get them by another method. Civilisation.was trembling in 'the balance, and we must place in.the scaie every ounce of our energy, courage, and •wealth. The Premier's remark© weT© loudly applauded.
