ENEMY REPELLED AT TARNOPOL

A communique state® that the enemy made "a vigorous offensive westward and south-westward of Dvinsk, and cut the railway in the vicinity of Novo Svlentsriany.: Owing to pressure in the region between Novo Svlentziany and the Vilna districts, we retired to the neighbourhood of Poddrodge. The enemy have been considerably reinforced' in the Skidel region. The, enemy are advancing cautiously on the roads from the line Volkkwysk —Kartuszkne—Bereza* eastwards. The Russians in the, Tarnopol district/under a hurricane <>f artillery fire, progressed and took prisoners. They repelled'the Germans, who are retiring northwards. Generally speaking the Austro-Ger-mans' efforts are directed a"t maintaining the appearance of an offensive. Their losses are altogether disproportionate to the results-
