SALE OF WORK.

ST. JOHN'S METHODIST OIIUROH

The animal sale of work in connection •with St. John's Methodist. Church was opened in the Church Hall yesterday afternoon by the Mayor (Mr C. J. Harley) in the presence of a largo attendance of supporters of the church. Tho stalls wero as well laden as usual, showing that the ladies, m spite of the many other calls that had been ■ made on their time during the year, had been working hard to accomplish fchoir. o'bjeet. viz.. the raising of funds to liquidate the elebt owing on the. church buildings. In addition io tho stalls, thero was v well-laden Christmas tree, and many attractive side shows. i'ti© Rev. W. Bnnmber expressed pleasure at having tho Mayor to open their sale of woik, and remarked that it would bo a ehaugo for him after -the many patriotic speeches ho had made recently to perform that little- duty. The Mayor, in a. happy speech, commended tho ladies for their efforts in aid of the laudable object for which they had banded themselves together. He'said that seven year,-; ago they had set to work to liquidate the cost of church buildings, amounting to £1400, and they had sewn so successfully that he believed their object would be achieved this year. Two years ago tlio debt was reduced to :CSOO, and one- of the trustees had premised that when £400 was raised be would' suppJetr.out the amount hv £100. When that was done they 'woulc! be in tho glorious position of having everything freo of d'dbt. Of tlie amount taken ;:t the r.alo of work it was proposed to clevoto one-tenth to the war fund. Assuming, as ho did, that their object would be achieved, the ladies intended then to do.vok) their energies to patriotic purposes. He hoped their efforts would bo crowned with success. .Mr Harlc;/ then declared thy sale <.i' work open. On the motion of Mr Baumber, a hearty vote of thanks to the Mayor was carnJd by acclamation.
