TEXT OF THE NOTE PUBLISHED.

GERMANY'S ANXIETY TO SPARS

NEUTRALS. GULF LIGHT TORPEDOED IN

ERROR

(Received June 1, 8.15 p.m.) Washington, June 1

The text cf the German Note has been published. It confirms the cabled summary.

The Note avers that Germany ekes not intend jo attack neutral ships in the war zone which are not guilty of hostile acts. German officers have been repeatedly instructed to avoid such attacks, and if neutrals have suffered it has been due to mistaken identification. In some cases it is attributed to Britain's abuse of the flag, together with suspicious cr culpable behaviour on the part of the masters of the ships.

Mr. Gerard, American Ambassador at Berlin, cabled that the Gulf Light was torpedoed by mistake.
