MUSICAL SOCIETY.
A largely attended meeting of the Stoke Musical Society was held on Wednesday evening, when the president (Mr. D. H. Wilmot) occupied the chair. He explained that the annual meeting held some weeks previously had been adjourned, as opinions were then divided as to the wisdom of continuing operations this winter owing to the war. It was unanimously resolved that the society continue as in former years, and it was pointed out that besides doing good in the community the society might be able to assist those in distress caused by the great war now raging. Officers were elected as follows: —Patrons, Miss Marsden, Dr. Andrew, and Mr. A. V. Allport; president, Mr. D. H. Wilmot; vice-presi-dent, Mr. H. H. Edwards; secretary and treasurer, Mr. F J. Hall; committee, Mrs. J. Wood, Mrs. Bolt, Miss Adams, Messrs. A. P. Allport, R. Black, T. Englebrecht and E. Russell; auditor, Mr. R. Black. It was decided that the society commence practices on Wednesday, the 19th inst., and that two concerts be given this year. The conductor (Mr. T. C. C. Scott), in giving his report, laid down a scheme of work for the season, and expressed the hope that continued progress would take place. It is anticipated that the services of Mrs. Wilson, lately of Invercargill, will be obtained as pianist, and if this is so the society will be extremely fortunate. Indications point to a very enjoyable and instructive year's work. Several new members were elected, and generally the prospects of the society are very bright.
