AN EXPLANATION
Auckland,' May' 9. ' Tho Governor has received tlie following cablegram from the Secretary o f state for the Colonies:—"With reference to yowv message of May 2nd. lam informed that lists of wounded w ho have arrived in Egypt are despatched daily."when checked. No lists of those killed in action, excepting officers, had i earned Egyi>i> on May sth. Lists of wounded are not cabled from the front, owing to difficulties, but are made on the arrival of ships." Tho Governor referred to this matter when speaking at the Orphans' Club last night "I am afraid it will be S'ime time Kefore we receive a list of those New Zealanders who have been killed at the Dardanelles," ' he remarked "The names of wounded have come from a . base hospital in Egypt, but moro serious items will not como through fov.some days yet."
