PICKED AUSTRIAN TROOPS ROUTED.
STRUGGLE FOR A VANTAGE
POINT
Paris, April 4. A description of the attempt of a I division of the Tyrolese, the best troops < remaining to Austria, to capture a projecting bluff, where the Russian front came near a Galician river, its salient being a land mark in a curve from the western front against Germany, to the }southern front -against Austria, show I \ that the enemy for two clays poured &< (torrent oi shells on. the laWl, defended / merely by parts of two regiments. ' The attackers, who were ensconced at night in the rifle-pits on the lower edge of the trench, found a lodgment j hi an upper wood, the Austrian artil- ■ lery pounding the Russians over the heads of the Tyrolese. An infantry! attempt was made to pierce the Rus- j sian line at the point of the salient, at which junction the two defending regiments now came to reply, standing up under the cannonade. Russian infantry, supported by machine guns, poured in devastating volleys, beating oft the enomy's rush, and tho Tyrolese trenches became lines of corpses. No attempt was made to resist the bayonet, and some of the Russians descended the river and assailed the enemy on the flank. Thirteen hundred Austrian corpses were counted in the wood. Abandoning their baggage the retreaters gained the hills across the | river.
