Nurse J. Ingram, lately sister ab the Napier Hospital, who has been selected for service with the Ncav Zealand nurses at "the front, is at present visiting her family at Richmond, prior to leaving for Europe.
Captain H. C Carr, of the auxiliary cruiser Bayano, who, with the greater number of his crew, Avas drowned through the sinking of the vessel after she had been torpedoed by a submarine off the coast of last week, was known in New Zealand. He was m command of H.M.S. Psyche when she -was at Wellington during thewaterside strike.
Mr Harvey Finlayson, formerly editor of the Adelaide "Register," was killed •'in a motor-car accident in Melbourne last week. He Avas driving his own car, when it skidded and upset.
Mr. John'Clayton, Town Clerk of Melbourne since, 1891, will retire from that position at the end of the month. Though incorporated nearly threequarters of a century ago, Melbourne oily has only had lour town clerks.
The death occurred at the Nelson Hospital yesterday of Mr. William E. Ham, whose sou died in Egypt recently from wounds Received in action against the Turks. The deceased, who was a native of Ireland, belonged to a family whiph has numerous associations with the Army, not only in the past, but at the present time. The cause of death. was* pneumonia and heart failure.
Br D. M. Y. Sommerville (St. Anthows), Professor of Mathematics at Victoria College, and Dr. E. Marsdeo {Manchester). Piwfessor of Physics at the same institution^ have arrived from the Old Country.
The wife of Admiral Sir Frederick Doveton Sturdee is a Melbourne lady, and was Miss M. A. Andrews. At the time of their marriage the famous Admiral of the future was in command of tlie Porpoise in Australian waters.
Mr It. Semple, having resigned his position as organiser to the United! Federation of Labour, has secured employment at Bealey Flat.
Advice has been received in Palmer•ston North of the death in Egypt of Bandmaster B. J. Simpson, of the Main Expeditionary Force, following upoa an operation. Ho was well known in the Wairarapa, Canterbury, and Hawke's Bay in connection with brass hands. For three years he was champion cornetist of the Dominion. He was appointed bandmaster of the llegimenta'i Band in the main camp at. Awapuni. He was a son of Nurse Simpson, or Palmerston. —Press Association.
Mr. Laing, Dunedin manager of the Union Bank, has received cable advice' that his brother, Captain H. D. Laing, was killed in action on Saturday last. : Captain Lain";, who was married, was aitout 3S-years of age. He was captain of a Territorial regiment at Inverurie,which regiment was attached, to the Gordon Highlanders.—Press Association.
