COUNTRY NEWS.

UPPER MOTJTERE,

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

(From "The Colonist," Nov. 5.) The annual school children's concert was held on October 30th, and was repeated on the 2nd insi. by request, and because a shower stopped a number of parents and children from being present on Friday night. The of both concerts was plainly evident. by the large and enthusiastic audiences, and the amount of money taken. The hall was packed with people on both evenings, and the total net amount of money taken was £16 14s 10d. Thesum of £8 Is was derived from the first and £8 13s lOd from the second performance. This money was to have been devoted to procuring, prizes for the school children on their sports day, but just befor© the concert the children begged that all money taken should be devoted to the Belgian Relief Fund. After some hesitation their offer was accepted: Their loyal, unselfish, and sympathetic spirit must appeal to everyone, and especially so when it is taken into consideration that Upper Moutere is supposed to be a German village, and has over 60 per cent, of the children with German blood by descent. The manner in which the young folk have acted, in conjunction with their parents, certainly entitles them to The highest praise and recommendation. Their selfsacrificing efforts were not in vain, and very soon brought their reward. An anonymous donor has announced that he will replace the money given to the Belgian Relief Fund This will enable the children to achieve their noble purpose, and also receive their usual prizes. Whoever the donor is, it is felt sure that he will have the thanks of all loyal and true people, and especially of the children. The honour of placing such a successful concert before the people of Upper Moutere rests with Mrs E. Eggers and her able assistant, Miss Armstrong, r.
