MOTUEKA BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Motuesa Borough Council was held' on Tuesday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. P. G. Moffatt) in the chair, Crs. Buckeridge, Grooby, Brougham and Staples. Resolved (the Mayor and Cr. Brougaam), that the Council tender a vote of sympathy to Cr. Riimbold on account of his recent accident.

Messrs. Easton and Nicholson wrote asking whether Fearon's Bush was to be registered in the transfer-as n lecreation reserve, or as ordinary land. —Resolved, that the opinion of the Municipal Association's, solicitor be i.btained whether, it was possible to have the property registered as ordinary, land owned by the Council. Correspondence wa<<3 read as follows": -From the secretary, Diocesan Trust, asking permission to break the. road surface in front of the Orphanage in order to alter the size of some waterpipes.—Granted; work to be done under the supervision of the foreman. From Mr. Andrew Miller, stating that the pipes ordered would be forwarded next week. —Received.

From the' New Zealand Acetylene Gas Company, stating that carbide had. arrived in Sydney, and would be foi warded shortly. A small shipment was coming forward from Dunedin to tde over the shortage1. Th,e war risk on tre indent order would amount'to 12 per cent.—Received. -

Resolved (the Mayor—Cr. Grooby) that the ditch at the end of Pah street be filled in for a distance of 80ft.; and that Messrs. Manoy and Son's offer 1o contribute half the cost be accepted, the pipes to be 18in. in diameter. The foreman reported on work done during the month. The water-tables in High street required tarring, and noxious growths required removing in Hurethouse street.

The report of the Inspector of. Nuisanc&s was adopted. Resolved, that applications be invited for the- position of ranger in . '■•he borough. The secretary of the Women's War Relief Fund (Miss Batch el or)- wrote thanking the Council for their donation to the fund.

The Mayor reported that it was probable that Major Norton would give -.i. lecture in Motueka on the subject, of the export of produce to England n.:'d the Continent. He had invited Major Norton over, as he thought that the visit would be of great educational value to the farmers of the district.— Resolved, that the action of the Mayor in the matter be'endorsed.

Cr. Brougham brought forward the Question of the making of a road along the foreshore towards the Beacons, and suggested that the Harbour Board be approached in order to make a road on their property to link up a complete road to the new harbour-.—Resolved, that the matter be left in the hands of the Works Committee.

Cr. Fry moved the motion of which lie had given notice, "That the stonebreaker be set up' in a more central site." It was necessary, hojsaid. that broken metal should be used in order to make good streets.—Cr. Grooby seconded the motion. —Cr. .Brougham was in favour of hand-cracked metal, as it was more lasting.—-The motion was carried, Cr. Brougham voting against it. Cr. Buckeridge brought up the question of purchasing a water cart. He said the motor traffic was making the dust an intolerable, nuisano", and he thought that, with, the assistance of the business people who had pumping stations, the necessary water supply would be available.—Resolved, that a committee consisting of the Mayor, Crs Buckcridge, and, Grooby be a sub-com-mittee to report on the. matter at a future meeting.

Accounts were passed for payment ■ amounting to £105 4s 6d. The overdraft at the Bank of New Zealand was stated to be £1338 14s.
