MOUNTAIN KNIGHT
For some seasons past (writes Sir Lancelot" in the Wellington Evening Post") Mr E. J. Watt, the Hawke's Bay sportsman, lias been racing on an extensive scale in Australia, and his colours have been carried to victory in all the States except Wostrana, where the "blue and white jacket has not yet been seen. Midnight Sun won the Adelaide Cup, Wimmera, Ireland, and Royal Scotch won in Victoria, Ventura scored in the Breeders' Plate at Randwick. She and Mopnbna and lat> terley were also successful m Queensland.' Mr Watt's success in the A.J.U Derby, of 5000 soys, at Randwick on Saturday, was easily the most noteworthy since he has been racingr Alter his victory in the Chelmsiord Stakes, nine furlongs, at Randwick ■■ a .few weeks back, Woorak was considered something like a moral. Mounts a Knight (who had the'assistance of W. H. McLachlau, Australia's premier horseman) ran second in the ff^Z ford Stakes and evidently outstayed Woorak, who had never previously been beaten, except..in the Oakleigh Plate, in which he finished out jO f .a..place.; Mountain Knight was bred by Mx John McDonald at the Mungie Bundle New South Wales, and cost his presen. owner 210 guineas as a yearling.^ ; as a two-year-old he .scored only ■onoe/ { out of eight starts-ma Nursery Handro-ip at Itendwick on New Ytar's* Day. Mountain-King (Wallace-Bonnie Rosette) was a winner of the-.A.J.C. .an-i V.R..C. Derbies. H© is a full biothei to Scottish King, winner of the V.X.L,. St. Leger; Kinghke (winner of toe OaulfieW tineas), ( and + Bonnie-^Chi^ La Veille (dam of Mountain Knight) is a member of the Nightmare family, tj which belong Wakeful, of-Nightfall, Npct\iifprTn,^.),,Drea|aer dam of Bon Reve); Drought .(dam of Sunburnt). The two last-named are
by Mostyn, a successful performer in South Australia, and full sisters to La Veille. Mountain Knight is not.to race again at Randwick. His owner has evidently decided to reserve him for the V ictoria Derby.
