FIRE.
A RESIDENCE DESTROYED
The residence of Mr A. C. Maginnity, situated in, Kawai street, near the Boys' College, was totally destroyed by 'fire about 5.30 o'clock last evening. A high wind was blowing at the time, and the flames enveloped the whole house tn a few minutes; so that only a very small portion of the contents could be removed, despite the efforts of a number of workers, including a squad, of College boys. The Eire Brigade reached the scene within a few minutes of "the alarm being-given, but as the burning building was situated on the crest of ;th« hill the pressure of wg»ter was almost useless. The house, which contained about eight rooms, was irsured in the South British office for £800, and j the furniture and effects for £200 in the New Zealand office. . Mr. Ma-gin- ! hity's loss over and above these amounts is considerable. During the afternoon men had been engaged in ! burning off the growth on the roadside, and evidently sparks carried by the wind caused the ignition^ of the house, the upper portion of which was alight when the fire was first noticed.
