The death occurred at Richmond on Sunday night of an old and respected settler in the person of Mr Henry Maemahon. For -many years the late Mr Macmahon was engaged in farming pursuits at Riwaka, but failing health led him to remove to a smaller farm at Richmond. The deceased leaves a widow to mourn her loss.

Sir William Vestey, head of the Blue Star Line, and managing director of the Union Cold Storage Company, Ltd., arrived in Wellington the other day from London, via Sydney.

A cable message published in the i ustralian papers states that Colonel Knight, of New South Wales, has died of wounds in France. The late Cojonel Knight was formerly to the New South Wales military establishment, and was generally recognised as aj. capable and aealous officer.

Mr Wilfrid Sim, the third son of Mr Justice Sim, who went from Wellington, to Samoa with'the first Expeditionary Force; is now filling several important positions in Samoa. Mr Sim, who holds the qualifications of barrister and solicitor, was appointed Commissioner of Police, Crown Prosecutor, and Administrator of Native Affairs.

An intimation has been received in Wellington from the Salvation Army International Headquarters, London, that Commissioner W. J. Richards, who is under orders to transfer to Canada in succession to the late Commissioner Rees. will himself"-be succeeded as territorial commander in New Zealand by Commissioner Henry C. Hodder, who has for several years been in command of the .Salvation .Army in Japan, but is at present in England. Commissioner Hodder (says a Press Association telegram) is an officer of 32 years' standing. H© is described as being a fine, capable man,' with an equally capable wife.
