EARLY CLOSING OF LICENSED HOUSES.

Mrs B. Harrison Lee Cowie, the wellknown temperance and no-license advocate has returned from a campaign tour of South Australia to liivercargill. In the course of an interview with the lady, on. the train, a "Southland Times" reporter was informed that her activities had been directed towards securing .support, for the temperance movement in connection with the referendum to be taken in South Australia, on the question whether hotels' shall close at 6 p.m., which is to be takon in March next year. Mrs Cowie stated that great progress had been made, and that the temperance organisations had gained a considerable increase of membership during the period of the campaign, which had extended from Adelaide to Broken . Hill. Tho Women's Christian Temperance Union had gained about 600 members, and, althogether, the prospects were good lor early closing.
