TASMAN.

(From Our Own Correspondents.)

The King's Birthday was observed here as a general holiday, and the majority of tiie residents gathered at the Recreation Reserve and spent the day in further improving the grounds by grubbing stumps and burning off. rubbish. Despite the wet weather there was an excellent attendance and good progress was made. The ladies, under the capable leadership of Mrs. F. R. Goddard, provided an attractive luncheon. In the evening a social and dance under the auspices of the Literary and Debating Society was held, Mr. T. Taylor, vice-president, occupying the chair. A good programme was rendered by local amateurs and after supper, dancing was indulged in for a couple of hours. Music was provided by Mr. C Thompson and extras were played by Messrs. Johnston and Goodyer.

The Tasman Brass Band, under Bandmaster John Goodyer; is putting in good work, rehearsing two nights a week, and the movement appears to be. a popular one among the young men of the district.

Very large consignments of fruit trees lor this season's planting are due to arrive at Tasman this week, the total exceeding the records for all previous seasons.
