NEW SOUTH WALES RAILWAY DISASTER.
TRIAL OF DRIVER IRWIN.
A QUESTION OF SIGNALS
Sydney, April 28
The trial of Peter Irwin, driver of the Temora mail train, which collided with another train at Exeter on March: 14th, on a charge of feloniously slaying Bray, one.of the victims, has commenced. Accused exhausted his right to challenge.
The case hinges on the signals. Counsel intimated that the defence would be that the distant signal showed green. The fog' was too thick for the driver to see a red light at the home signal.
The night officer, in evidence, said there was no fog, but the weather was misty. He could see the back lights indicating both signals at danger. If there was a green signal no back light would show.
Other witnesses stated that there was a dense fog.
The case has been adjourned
