CLASS DISTINCTIONS IN ENGLISH SCHOOLS.

Class distinctions are being broken down in the endowed schools in England, the llcv. Edwin Bean, late headmaster, of the Brentwood (Essex) Grammar School, told a Sydney interviewer last week. He said that very often theboys did not know who were the "bursary" scholars and who were not, and, what was more important, did notcare. Some of the supercilious young fellows at Rugby and Harrow might perhaps look rao.wn upon "bursary" boys if the system were ever applied to those schools. On the voyage out he had asked a young man from Rugby what kind of a reception the son of, say, a blacksmith, would get, and had been told that he would be jixdged on his merits. He was rather doubtful as to the treatment the blacksmith's son would receive. Of course, there would always be snobs —that is, those who measured one's 'worth by his purse or his birth. The purse-proud snob was probably the worst, for the other fellow at all events had some breeding.
