NELSON JOCKEY CLUB.

; ANNUAL RACE MEETING. PERONEAL WINS THE CUP. , (From. "The Colonist," March 12.) The annual Mneeting of the Nelson Jockey Club opened auspiciously at' [.Richmond' Park yesterday. The weather" conditions were perfect, andf the attendance of the public must have been a record. A noticeable feature was the large number of visitors from Wellington, West Coast, Marlborough and the Golden Bay districts. . The course after the long spell of dry weather was hard, arid the horses raised clouds of dust, but none of them showed any signs of soreness after their, efforts. Although the fields, with the exception of the trots and the maiden hack wore not large, the racing was interesting, and the fact that Mr. J. Q. Patterson, the deputy-stipendiary steward, was not called upon to exercise his powers, shows that there was nothing shady in the running. The public had a good day, 'favourites winning five out of the eight races on the programme. Mr. W. Nidd scored a double win' with Peroneal and Peronilla in the Cup and Grand Stand Handicap, both of whom started warm favoxtrites. The totalisator investments totalled 1 £7784 as against £7511 for the first day last' year, an increase of £273 only. In view of the larger attendance this year, this was. somewhat disappointing, but the cause may be attributed directly to the delay in getting the horses out in the earlier races, thereby limiting the time for investments on the machine. It j was noticeable that in the last three races, with the horses out early, the money poured in freely, and the investments on the Welter Hack, with four starters, were in excess of the amount invested in the Nelson Cup with five starters. Several improvements have been carried out by the Club since last year, including the erection of a new judge's box, and blackboards for the posting of information. The latter proved a great convenience. What is badly wanted is an afternoon tea kiosk, and this is a, matter which should engage the attention of the owners of the Park —the Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Yesterday afternoon so great was the demand for lunch that it was well after three o'clock before tea was procurable. The results are as follows: — MAIDEN HACK RACE: of 60sovs.; aacond 7 soys., and third 3sovs. from the stake.
