A well attended and vCry successful and enjoyable social evening was spent by tho members "of tlio Maitai Lodge 3 No 15, U.A.0.D., in their lodge room (tlio Orange Lodge Hall), on Monday evening, after the disposal of the usual lodge business. The presiding officer, A.D. Bro. H. J. Tindifl, conducted the meeting, and there were several visitors present, including Lee. Bro. G. Sadd, of the Melros© Lodge, U.A.0.D., Bro. Baigent, of the Trafalgar Lodge, and D.P. Bro D. Cruchck. An excellent musical programmo was presented, and included songs by Bro. Borthelson and P.D.P. Bro. J. Simpson; a humorous reading by P.A. Bro E. Chappell, a monologue and somo excellent banjo solos by P.A. Bro. Tayler, and a number of good yarns. In addition to these P.A. Bro. H. A. Hcbbs contributed sorno very fine phonograph selections. The accompaniments , were \ layocl Ly Bro. F. Norcross, who. also rendered two good pianoforte solos. During an interval in tho harmony the Lodge.Secretary, P.A. Bro. W. F. Thomson*delivered a short Ice sure upon "Ancient and Modern Druiclism." Tlio address, which lasted about threequarters of an hour, dealt with tho moral and religious teachings. Ancient Druids and their history were traced from as far back as 1.000 years b c, and onwards, until tho inception of the modern friendly society which bears its name. The gradual riso of the organisation, which was at first but a mystic and solemn religious body, was Oi'th'ned step by step, and tho .; v-rious changes in its career noted, until, ?,-• it came down tho ages, it emerged into one of the prominent social forcos of tho prest'-nt day. Tho lecture, •viueb was attentively listened to, wa.i uuy much appreciated, and it was suggested that other phases of tho history of the order might bo dealt with m the same manner at frequent int/orvuis. Hearty votes of thanks were a'corded to all who had contributed the evening's entertainment, and aftor puriaking of light refreshments rinj Lodge closed with the singing of -"A.i'd Lang Syne."
