PRECAUTIONS IN CHRISTCHURCH.
Chrlstsfrurch, - July 15. Inquiries mado to-day went to show that the local health authorities art) quite alive to the necessity for making preparations for the 'treatment of any cases of smallpox that may be discovered in the district. It is hoped; however, that the precautions' being taken in the North Island, tbe 'stringent examination of passengers between the North Island and the" Soutfe Island, and as far as is passible of Maoris who., have b&sn found to bo buffering from the disease, will- prove efficacious in> preventing the epidemic from spreading to the South Island. A' fairly large number of .pooplo in thfc city have been vaccinated recently bjj public vaccinatprs, and by medical practitioners. It is considered that many, mor« ought to be vaccinated. The work of cleaning up the city is progressing, ttnd, as far as possible, steps are being taken to prevent the disease taking a foothold in Christchurch
