THE PENINSULA BRIDGE.

TO BE OPENED TO-MORROW

Tho formal opening of the Peninsula bride over the Motueka river will take place to-morrow, when the ceremony of "cutting tho ribbon" will. bo performed by the Hon. R. McKonrae, M.P. for Motueka, at 11 o'clock. Ihe settlers in the locality have made arrangements for celebrating tho occasion in a suitable manner, and the chairman and members of tho Waimea County Council will be present Councillor Everett, of the Waimea County Council, at the monthly meetin</ yesterday gave some interesting details- in regard to the new bridge. Ho said that the original structure was overturned by a hea^y flood in tho Motueka river in October, 1911. At ■that time £1100 has been expended by the Council, and . the Joss wjjs £700. Up to the present the expenditure on the bridge, had been £2650. The length of the bridge was 275 feet with ten feet of roadway. It was built of steel on four concrete piers, with hinges in the centre to allow for heat expansion and contraction. Towards the cost of the bridge the Government had paid £900, £1100 had been raised by loan, the interest on which was paid by the settlers, while the contribution of the Council had been £650. The bridge, ho stated, was a very substantial structure, and was capable of carrying a load of ten tons.
