BRIGHTWATER'S NEEDS.

DEPUTATION TO THE COUNTY

COUNCIL

A deputation from the Brightwater Progressive Committee, consisting of Messrs. l*rice, S. P. Clay, and H. L. Foster, waited upon the Waimea County Council yesterday with the re quest "that a footpath be formed on the south side of tho main street at Brightwater, tho resident;? undertaking to contribute £20 towards the cost of tho kerbing. In support of the request, Mr. Clay said there was a great deal of through traffic at Brightwater, and as the electric light posts were now 'being put out seven feet from the road line the residents -were anxious to have the footpath. Mr. Clay said that during the past seven years rates paid by those in the locality totalled £500, and there;- had been very litte spent in the vicinity by the Council. Mr. Clay estimated that tho cost of tho material would be about £47. Replying to Cr. Macmahon, Mr. Clay said if the footpath was not made, tho electric light posts would be a clanger to traffic. In reply to the chairman, Mr. Clay said he could promise that the- residents of Brightwater would provide the necessary filling. Tho deputation having withdrawn, Cr. Houit said that considering tho residents of Brightwater wero prepared to put down £20 towards the cost of the work, it was the duty of the Council to subsidise that amount by more than & for £~ Tho Engineer stated that he estimated that t\w cost of kerbing would bo £100, and the cost of formation another £100.
