ABSENT WITNESSES.
"The law's delay," oft derided, usually has some sound rea-son behind it. Prospective motherhood, to wit, is a cause that makes terms with nobody. On Friday it pulled up with -a round turn tho march of judicial events at Dunedin. Sir Joshua Williams, when fixing the' order of civil cases for trial, was informed by ono of tho barristers presijat (says the "Star"), that a certain matter would have to stand owr," since a party to tho suit had entered a. maternity hospital. The Court smiled, and made a note accordingly. A few" minutes later a similar announcement led to a similar result and smiles from all present. Then a young barrister remarked that a witness in a case in which ho was concerned would also be unable to appear, for tho same reason. "One of your witnesses, did you say?" asked the Judge. "No, sir," was tho reply; "one of tho witnesses on the other side. Mine aro all out, I'm glad to say."
