There died on May 28, 1625, one Robert Pas-field, a Cheshire man who, though "mighty in the Scriptures," could neither read nor write. Paslieid, it is recorded, invented and manufactured an aid to memory in the form of "a girdle, largo and long which went twice about him." The girdk had a division for each book o f the Bible, while-narrow prongs of leather indicated the chapters and knots the verses. With this .belt Pasfield used to take notes of the sermons and was always able on return from church to repeat tho heads of the discount and quoto the texts which had boon mentioned, "to his own groa/t comfort and tho benefit of others."
