SHEEP INDUSTRY.
I In tho course of an article on sheep breeding in the Department of Agriculture's Journal, Mr. J. E. I'nioe gives it few figures which imlicito tho greatimportance of the ■shcM'p-Ur-eoding industry, and the dominant part it plays in our national prosperity. The total number of sheep in the Dominion at April 30, 1912, was 23,750,----153.
The exports for twelve months ending March 31, 1912, were as follows:— Mutton and lamb exported and £ ; locally consumed, 6,138,176 value 4,447,042 Sheep (live) exported. 7,855, value 40,000 j Wool exported, 176,963,6071b.; i locally utilised, 206,2501b.. j valuo 6,785,234 Skins, pelts, fat, and by-pro-ducts, value 943,186 Total £12.215,459 From the above figures it will be observed that the amount received from wool, mutton, and by-products is equal to about 10s 3d. por head on the flocks of the Dominion.
