Mr R. McEwan, late general manager for the Puponga Coal Company, who has been resting -in Nelson for some months, leaves on Thursday for Wellington and the south, with the object of examining a coal property on behalf of a Nelson and Collingwood syndicate.

Captain J. Houlker was last evening presented with a case of silver-mount-ed pipes by the boys of Company 50, Senior Cadets, of which he is in command. Owing to pressure of other engagements Captain Houlker has found it necessary to ask to be relieved of his cadet work, and his resignation dates from the 31st inst. Colour-Ser-geant Bell, on behalf of the boys, made the presentation, and expressed the high regard they had for Captain Houlker, and at his call the boys gave three hearty cheers. Captain Houlker, in reply, thanked them for their gift, and said he felt very great regret at leaving them, and he hoped they would always endeavour to maintain a high standard of drill. He hoped many of them would avail themselves of the opportunity to gain commissions by examination.
